Hi, 
 
I just finished processing M42 and Horsehead which you can find the details at the observation day from 9/22.  This is the most difficult object that I've processed so far.  I'm not satisifed but after 3 days of trial and error, I'm ready to share it:

Nice image!. Maybe you should try taking some short exposure images to preserve the core. I believe Deep Sky Stacker has an option for that.
