M13 - Processed with DSS (Deep Sky Stacker)

All of you were right about the processing of my first DSO (M13).  In my quest to get a dark sky, I had clipped a bunch of information, including making the image B&W.

I was fortunate to spend last night with Neil, and we spent some time on image processing.

One of the things, we looked at was the processing of the M13 DSO that I shot on 5/23/09.

I don't have Photoshop, but still I manage to get all the DSS parameters wrong (even when Neil has developed a fantastic guide).  I ended up clipping a lot of information in the image.  Neil and I sat and we laughed about the most basic mistakes I had made, including making the image B&W.  :)

So, we went into processing the original RAW image again, and although you are not supposed to use DSS, I don't have Photoshop, Neil used DSS to balance the image.  He did not spent more than 5 minutes, but the results are awesome and clearly different in compare with the M13 image I posted originally.

Here you have the results:

Thank you all again for your feedback and encouraging words!

Chris,
DSS stands for aligning and stacking software called Deep Sky Stacker. Most deep sky photos are a combination of several exposures aligned and stacked to create a final photo. M13 is short for Messier 13. Named after Charles Messier who made a list of the brighter objects he saw while hunting for comets. M13, is the 13th object on his list......a globular star cluster in the constellation hercules.

I am an astro-photogrphy newbie...can you please explain what is DSS-M13? I like the picture a lot : )

Yeah! I'm just starting with my equipment, so I definetely haven't reached the limit of my equipment yet. Still, so much to learn.

Very nicely done! Great image!

Neil is a walking encyclopedia of imaging. He has taught me a lot. One of these days I will begin bumping up against the limits of my modest equipment. Then it will be decision time..... Be happy as is, or move up to more sophisticated equipment and software. Not sure what I will do at this point.....still have quite a bit more to get out of the setup I have.
