Meeting of SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON STARGAZERS  2/12/10

We meet the 2nd and 4th fridays of the month at 8:00pm, at Manor Evangelical Church, 17913 NE 72nd Ave. in Battle Ground, WA.   Meetings are informal, as is the club itself.  We have no officers or bylaws.  Anyone with an interest in astronomy is welcome.

A lightly attended meeting.  Attendance picks up dramatically when the weather permits observing sessions that take place right after the meeting, in the parking lot behind the church.  Several members bring telescopes and make them available to everyone.

At meetings, one or more members normally do presentations on topics of interest.  Tonight Steve S. explained and demonstrated a free downloadable program called "Where is M13?"   In the photo, Terry H. is pointing out features of interest in and around crater Schickard, on the Moon.   Terry is our resident moon expert.

Members cover the spectrum of amateur astronomy....from highly experienced to novice, with interests that range from visual observing to astrophotography.

I hear you Jeff. The SWS group intentionally has no officers and only recently assumed a dues for insurance in order to stay in the place we meet.

I don't attend nearly as often as I'd like. I probably make it 4 or 5 times a year, but I'm fairly active on the forum site/email list and when I'm there... I'm really there! (probably driving people nuts wishing I'd maintain my status quo of not showing up! LOL)

Speaking of no officers, I just had to add this little tidbit that came to mind...

ARTHUR: Please, please good people. I am in haste. Who lives in that castle?
WOMAN: No one live there.
ARTHUR: Then who is your lord?
WOMAN: We don't have a lord.
ARTHUR: What?
DENNIS: I told you. We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We take it in turns to act as a sort of "executive officer for the week".
ARTHUR: Yes.
DENNIS: But all the decision of that officer have to be ratified at a special biweekly meeting.
ARTHUR: Yes, I see.
DENNIS: By a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs,--
ARTHUR: Be quiet!
DENNIS: --but by a two-thirds majority in the case of more--
ARTHUR: Be quiet! I order you to be quiet!
WOMAN: Order, eh -- who does he think he is?
ARTHUR: I am your king!
WOMAN: Well, I didn't vote for you.
ARTHUR: You don't vote for kings.
WOMAN: Well, 'ow did you become king then?

Yes Jeff, it's a good group. Very laid back. We pay $20 a year for liability insurance, but that's it. We have a group of about 10-12 regulars and another 10 or so that come irregularly. There is no pressure....come when you want...stay home if you want. Everyone gets along. Just a lot of chit chat, observing when the weather cooperates and a star party now and then.

Sounds like a good group Barry. the group here where I live is not so casual. I stopped going to meetings after about a year. There have been other members leave as well. It got to be more about club business than astronomy.

good to see a group more concerned about the sky than the balance sheet or the schedule of events.
